Tidbit Tuesday – Are You Taking the Right Form of Vitamin D?

Supplementing our diet with vitamin D can provide a variety of health benefits including protection from swine flu, infections of all kind, osteoporosis, depression and breast cancer. It also plays an important role in heart health, prostate health, colon health, eye health, bone health and blood pressure.

However, be sure you are taking the right form. There are two forms of Vitamin D – Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. The form you should be taking is Vitamin D3. Vitamin D2 is a cheaper, synthetic form that the body cannot process very well.

Vitamin D3 has been found to be 300 times more effective than Vitamin D2.

  1. My friend has been having trouble with terrible fatigue for about a year. A doctor checked her vitamin D level two and a half months ago, and it was 19. She was started on 50,000 ICU capsules of v-D3 twice a week. Now it’s 17 (apparently normal is between 30-90).

Any thought about what causes vitamin D to get low, and why taking high doses of vitamin D would result in it getting even lower?

      Hi Sheryl,

No, I’m sorry I have never heard of this before. I checked with a doctor mentor of mine and he hasn’t heard of it before either. He said is likely a lab error or your friend may have some unusual genetic polymorphism.

Be sure your friend has looked at all the contributing factors to chronic fatigue, which can be found on the following page.
