You may have seen the announcement on the news last week about a new
study that suggests calcium supplements may be linked to an increased
risk of heart disease. Here’s a couple very important points to be
aware of when drawing conclusions from this study.
The subjects in this study were only taking calcium without vitamin D.
Nobody should be taking calcium without vitamin D. Calcium must be
accompanied by vitamin D or the body can’t absorb it. Any half
educated physician should know this, so if your doctor is prescribing
calcium without vitamin D, it ‘s time to find a new doctor.
Since the subjects in this study were taking calcium without vitamin
D, this could be what caused heart disease in these subjects. If
calcium is not absorbed, then it could possibly result in depositing
in the arteries and leading to blockage.
Additionally, vitamin D deficiency which is rampant in our society, is
believed to be a major contributing factor in heart disease. So this
could be the cause of heart disease in the study.
Sounds like somebody is trying to discredit the benefits of calcium
supplementation and discourage women from taking them by omitting some
of the facts so they will take prescription drugs instead.
What I believe you should conclude from this study is that calcium
should be taken with vitamin D, not discontinued.
