Tidbit Tuesday – Endocrine Disruptor, BPA, Found in Store Receipts

August 3rd, 2010 · No Comments ·

In a recent study by Environmental Working Group they found that 2/5ths of the paper receipts you receive from your ATM, grocery store, fast-food restaurants, retail stores, convenient stores and even your post office contained significant levels of the harmful endocrine disruptor BPA.

BPA is a chemical that disrupts the endocrine system by mimicking estrogen in the body. This leads to hormonal imbalances, endocrine disorders like adrenal fatigue, reproductive disorders and has been linked to a variety of other conditions and symptoms like behavioral abnormalities, early onset of puberty, obesity, cancer, decrease in intellectual capacity, asthma, cardiovascular disorders and it even alters genes.

Furthermore, in another study earlier this month it was found that BPA is easily transferred from the receipts onto your skin and can penetrate the skin so deep it can’t even be washed off, meaning it can enter the blood stream quite quickly and easily.
