The Single Best Way to Boost Your Immune System

With the appearance of the Swine Flu, boosting the immune system has been on the minds of many people a little more than usual this year.

However, most people will probably be surprised to learn that the single most effective step they can take to substantially reduce their risk of picking up any virus and staying healthier through the cold and flu season costs them absolutely nothing.

Remove Sugar from the Diet. This includes white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, cane sugar, powdered sugar, high fructose corn syrup and even organic sugar.

Sugar is detrimental to the immune system. It decreases the white blood cells that our body needs for strong immune function and depletes our vitamin and mineral levels, which leaves the body vulnerable to viruses, bacteria etc.

Because sugar is void of any nutrients, the body must draw on nutrients from the bones and tissues to metabolize it. When sugar is consumed on a frequent basis, this can lead to a variety of nutritional deficiencies. A body that is nutrient deficient cannot have a strong immune system to fight off viruses, bacteria etc.

In a study in the Journal Archives of Surgery 1999, they found that 2 cans of soda suppresses immune function for up to five hours by more than 90%. While another study at Loma Linda University found that sugar suppresses phagocytes, white blood cells that protects our body from viruses and other harmful substances or organisms.

Sugar is not a real food. It is a chemical that impacts the brain in the same manner as drugs and alcohol. It is not only destructive to the immune system, but the nervous system and cardiovascular system as well.

Not only that, it also leads to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, feeds cancer cells, promotes inflammation, increases bad cholesterol, alcoholism, addiction and much more.

Other important steps to boost the immune system include eating lots of fresh or frozen veggies, increase your protein intake, get adequate exercise and sleep, reduce stress, drink plenty of water and eliminate caffeine.

So if  you’re starting to think about New Years Resolutions, removing sugar from the diet should be at the top of the list. Whether you’re trying to avoid the Swine Flu or the standard run of the mill flu, less sugar in the diet is the single most important step you can take to protect yourself.

The great news is that this is one of those simple self-care strategies that you can employ on your own, without any costly nutritional supplements, prescriptions or visits to the doctor.
