Hair Analysis for Toxic Metal Testing

The hair analysis is one of the most affordable, convenient, yet powerful self diagnostic tools that is available to you without a visit to the doctor's office or lab.

Most functional medicine, integrative and/or holistic practitioners consider the hair analysis to be one of the most effective and reliable methods for assessing the presence of toxic metals in the body.

A favorite for the client as well, because it is low-cost, easy, non-invasive and can be done in the comfort of their own home.

We live in a world that is toxic and these toxins accumulate in our bodies and cause poor health. Toxic metals like mercury, cadmium, arsenic, lead, aluminum, antimony, uranium and more are found on a daily basis in your food, air and water.

When these toxins build up in your tissues and organs they lead to brain dysfunction, a weakened immune system, hormone and central nervous system disruption, gastrointestinal damage, nutritional deficiencies ,and degradation of organs and system functions, which leaves the body vulnerable to a vast array of debilitating conditions, symptoms, diseases, syndromes and disorders.

Symptoms and Conditions Linked to Metal Toxicity

Some of the most common conditions linked to metal toxicity include Alzheimer's, autism, arthritis, candida overgrowth, gastrointestinal disorders, auto-immune disorders, insomnia, Parkinson's, thyroid disorders, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, kidney and liver disease, chronic fatigue, infertility, and hypertension, but there are many more.

If you have any health condition, disorder etc., assessing the levels of toxic metals in your body with a simple hair analysis should be a crucial component of the healing plan. Even if you don't have an existing health condition, it's important to learn this information so you can take preventative steps to protect your health in the future.

Once toxic metals are identified in the body, there are a variety of steps that can be taken to eliminate them, which often results in significant improvements in health.

Why a Hair Analysis?

If toxic metals are in the tissues and organs of your body, they will accumulate in your hair as well and that is why the hair analysis is the best way to measure their presence. Toxic metals will only show up in the blood if there is a recent or ongoing exposure to the toxin, it doesn't identify those that are stored.

Toxic Metals will also show up in the urine with a chelation challenge test, and this is a very reliable method of detection as well. However, it requires a visit to the doctor and is much more costly. The hair analysis puts the power in your hands and is much easier and affordable.

You receive a simple little kit in the mail with instructions on how to cut your hair. You cut your hair, insert it into the envelope provided and mail it back to the lab. Your results will be sent directly to you within a couple weeks.

Where to get a Hair Analysis

There are many different labs who offer hair analysis, so you have a variety of choices which can be confusing. Most labs wash the hair before testing, but it is believed by some practitioners that washing the hair in the lab can alter the results. So I believe it is best to go with a lab that doesn't wash the hair just to be sure.

Since there are only two labs who don't wash the hair, that narrows your choices down significantly. I prefer a lab called Trace Elements Inc. as they test for more metals than their competitor, Analytic Research.

Precautions

A hair analysis also provides you with information on the essential elements like copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron, molybdenum, sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, boron, manganese, cobolt. However you need to be aware that the hair is not the best way to measure the essential elements.

These elements can be influenced by minerals in your water, shampoo and soap and results have not been found to be consistent and reliable. With the exception of molybdenum, sulfur and maybe zinc. So this should be taken into account when interpreting this portion of the test. An RBC mineral test is a better way to measure the essential elements.
